JaVan is the greatest Aunt ever! I pretended to be a cougar for one night, bearded and all. No, hell has not frozen over. I had a blast... but it wasn't hard sitting on the front row, half court, sitting next to JaVan, Cecil Samuelson and his wife, and Elder Ellis on my left. It's a friday. I'm tired. I've been going 100 mph all day from call to email back and forth, etc. haven't showered, eaten, or moved. stressful day, one crisis after another.... 4:30 PM and I was hoping to be done around 2 pm....Motorcycle was suppose to arrive today but is delayed until Monday... But I get this text message from Barrett that made me laugh. (Tommy calls me Tinny (Quinny))

Tommy Quote - "I always wanted a friend named tinny he's my best buddy." And then he drank his bowl of salsa.

German Love is a great song by star*. I like Germany a lot. Breakfast of champions. This food sat really well at 8 a.m. after flying all day and all night. My flight was almost boarding as I started eating very quickly. Worth it. Schnitzel, potatoes and a nice dark German Lager... (diet coke)

It was funny because some American guy went up to the café and asked the person if they had just eggs and bacon. Yeah right. When in Munich...

Tyson is in town for some meetings in Redondo Beach. He found the cheapest plane tickets in and out of Orange County so we were able to hang out yesterday. We took the little Balboa Island Ferry and he was very happy exclaiming, "We're Ferry'ing!" Highly inappropriate, I know. The other highlight of the day came later on. The peninsula is starting to get busy, kids everywhere, etc. Tyson and I were walking back from grabbing some food and we were on kind of a main street. A car drove by and some young girl in the backseat saw us and shouted, "ow OW!!! Hey boys…." Or something like that. After we realized what had happened Tyson and I looked at each other and starting laughing because why would some 19 year old girl be yelling at us? "Maybe her sunglasses were too dark?" "Maybe she was blind!" " Was there was someone behind us that she was yelling at?!?" I thought it was funny.

I upgraded my camera, so I'm sure it is just what I need to get blog-o-rama going again. Actually it started a few nights ago. As I was pulled over on the side of the road, in the snow and mud at midnight trying to change my tire unsuccessfully i thought "PAUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I'll pull a Quinn.tin T. and start from the beginning.

I was leaving Salt Lake around 11 p.m. heading back to Highland to pack and get ready for my trip. Between 7200 and 9000 South, my car felt like something was wrong. I didn't know if something was rubbing my tire or my transmission was about to explode, but something was wrong. I didn't think it was a flat tire because it was didn't blow, it got progressively worse. Luckily all this happened with plenty of time to get off at 90th South and asses the damage. Sure enough the front right tire was going flat and almost done for. I was very glad that I had payed the extra money for the unconditional tire warranty (twice in one week. warranties treated me well last month.)

By this time it was about 11:30 PM and I decided to enjoy the last few sips of my drink in peace before changing my clothes and going out in the slushy cold weather to change the tire. While I was chillin' there a nice kid offered his help, but I told him I would be okay. A few minutes later i put a jacket on, changed my pants and got to work. The car was on the shoulder and tilted slightly down hill. When I jacked the car up, I was still like 3-4 inches short from getting the car up high enough. Strange. I was on a little hill so I turned the car 180 degrees facing up the ramp on the side of the road. At this point a highway patrol asked me if i had been in a wreck and I told him I hadn't so he left.

To make a long story a little bit shorter, I positioned the car 5 different ways and the car was still about 3-4 inches to low to get the tire off. What in the world?!? It was late, I was cold and not thinking at 100% capacity. At this point another kid drove by and didn't really offer his help but just started helping. I didn't object because at this point I had put the car up and down about 6-7 times. A high patrol officer came by also and was in is gym clothes and put on his sirens so no one would hit me.

The kid that was helping me helped asses the situation and together we decided that we needed to get something to stack up under the jack. There were construction cones so we took off the thick bottom mats to use. so this kid was running up and down the offramp collecting mats. We got it up, not high enough, lowered it, couldn't get the old tire on, etc... It was an ordeal. About 45 minutes into this I thought, "Paul!!!!!!"

I remembered back about 2 months to when I was helping Paul change his brakes on his car. His little scrawny wimpy nissan sentra car jack wasn't that great, so I got my jack out of my jeep to use. SO, in the process of putting things away we must have mixed up the jacks seeing how they were the same exact style. All this time out in the cold and snow I was trying to jack my jeep up with a little passenger car jack.

Paul, Can I have my jack back?

We got the car put back together and the spare tire on and I went home. I was planning on waking up around 5 a.m. to do some work, pack, and get ready to go. When I woke up at 6:15 a.m. having slept through all my multiple alarms, I knew it would be tight. Threw stuff together, and Barry was nice enough to rush me to the airport battling the traffic and getting me there with about 5 minutes to spare.

Made it to San Francisco. Had a great time, saw Tony Sly (No Use For A Name) play an acoustic set in San Jose and had a great time.

Now I am back in Newport and things are going well. I got some new neighbors in the front of my house and they are 2 kids that just graduated from MIT in Mechanical Engineering and they are super nice and not the typical lame-o's that live in my neighborhood. We are going to barbeque this week and share internet. Instant BFF's. :)

I would say that Griffin wins for the best picture messages, and Raul in a close second.

The first message dates back many summers ago when Griffin and I were watching scary movies. So about 2:30 a.m. with 30 minutes left in the skeleton key, Griffin decided to go take a phone call and leave me ALONE to finish that movie. Thanks. Good thing he got married and that phone call was worth it.

THEN, i went to find another creepy movie and i wanted to rent white noise, but they had it previously viewed for SALE for 3.99. Great deal! Now I can have it forever.

We watched it, and waited, and waited, and waited for something to happen, but nothing ever did. Worst movie ever. Now i own it and have it forever.

So yesterday, I get an email with a picture attached from Griffin and it says "because the first one was so awesome..." I hadn't opened the picture yet, and i expected to see an ultrasound, or another purchase, car, who knows. Nope.

This is the picture I got. Caught off guard.

White Noise the deuce. The exciting sequel. Funny it was still on the shelf because i thought Griffin would have already thrown it into his cart, jumping for joy. white noise. what a joke.

I have a hard time going out and "exercising" just for the sake of it. Running, swimming, lifting weights....it's all fun for about 20 minutes and then I am bored and lose interest. I noticed that when I went hiking it seemed like i always wish i had more time, wanted to go a little furter, etc.

2 months ago I bought a mountain bike. a nice used bike with full suspension. It is pretty fun. I have been going a bunch in draper. I bike to the top of ridge east of suncrest and then i cruise down. It is super hard, but very entertaining. going down is a little rickety compared to a dirt bike, but i'm kind of getting used to it. I got up at 6 am and cruised up this morning and took these pics.....

Ah. Beautiful Almaty. Today the sun is out a little more so it could be nice. I know my last story was good...so hold on tight.

Little background.
Wednesday - Left Utah
Thursday - Arrived in Kiev around 2pm and worked till 7 ish.
Friday - Worked all day in Kiev
Saturday - Flew from Kiev to istanbul to Almaty
Sunday - 7 a.m. landed in Almaty

Long story short, I slept about 5 hours Thursday night, and really that was all i had slept since the previous Tuesday, except an hour here or there in a really nice airplane seat. Friday night i didn't sleep because i thought i would have all day saturday to relax, too busy and excited negotiating the purchase of a sweet 1981 road bike that barry drove to ogden to get, etc... Saturday was anything but relaxing. See previous post. Also I had to get be out the door early saturday morning to hang out with all my ukrainian girlfriends. Tough life.

So saturday night i planned on sleeping on the 5 hour red eye, but didn't happen. So I landed at what Blackberry said was 7 a.m. kazakhstan time, i hurried back to the hotel by 830, changed, ate, ordered a taxi at 945 for 10 a.m. church.

The taxi takes me to church, only to find that no one is there, and that it is only 9 a.m. Funny the driver didn't mention, "so, you're an hour early, eh?" Would have helped. The last time i went to that branch 2 years ago, church got out 30 minutes early. They kind of do what they want. But this time sacrement went 40 minutes over, and same with sunday school. At this point i was wasted. Headaches, dizzy, having trouble processing simple information... stressful saturday, flew through the night, didn't sleep... I was beat.

Priesthood was actually pretty good, talking about being educated. On my row there was 5 chairs, and there were people behind and in front of me, but only one old babushka sitting two seats away from me. I don't remember much of what followed, but i remembered that it was like 12:58 pm thinking that church was going to be over really soon...

The next thing i know, this old lady next to me, 2 seats away, is poking me. I was confused more than anything, and then everything started to make sense. I must have been sleeping. I must have started snoring or something, so she poked me to wake me up. I looked at the clock; 1:30 pm. There's dozing off during church, and then there are full fledged church naps. I was extremely proud of myself. 35 minutes. sitting up, didn't toss or turn once. out cold. The elder behind me said that i was well behaved and didn't make a peep during my nap, and the second i did, the lady poked me.

i found a taxi for the 1.2 miles home in the rain, paid the guy is 500 tenge, (about $4) asked for a receipt and he said, "hey, paper isn't free. if you want a receipt it will cost you another 500 tenge." i laughed and left. at this point in the trip, when the end is kind of in sight, i stop trying to get adjusted to the local time, sleep any chance i get, and as michael bluth says, i power through. Especially because Turkey to Kazakhstan is another 4 or 5 hour time change, so it's impossible. Sunday afternoon i took a nap, had one little meeting around 9 pm and had the WORST fish and chips ever. Horrible. It was potato wedges and 4 little fish sticks. I will eat ANYTHING, and this almost made me sick. I was hungry, it was late, everything was closed, very limited late night dining...

There aren't any good hotel options here. But with our moscow office being next to a holiday inn, and having a holiday inn here Kazakhstan... you get the drift. I'll endure anything and laugh at it if i know i am accruing some good points. (i noticed a holiday inn on the beach in aruba :)

April 2013, JW marriott will be finished and opened in Almaty. Can't wait. if the crappy hotels are $300-$450 a night, i'm afraid to see the price tag on this one. ~JW ALMATY~

so this is one of those things that will be fun for me to record so i can look back and laugh, but I'm sure everyone gets tired of my dumb travel stories. It started like any other May 1st, with a demonstration of the "Ukrainian Communist Party" celebrating the day to commemorate the working class. I was having so much fun flying those red flags, that I didn't leave myself enough time to get to the airport. I did, but who would have guessed they would choke 4 lanes down to 1 over a bridge to do some road work. I made it, only to find that the 1:45 PM flight was delayed to 3:00 PM. Kiev to Istanbul, then istanbul to Kazakhstan at 10PM.

The lines were long, and I got behind 2 American girls in the security line and i was going to start the whole "you're american, i'm american, we can be friends." I was going to but they were pretty involved in their conversation in which they were discussing the methods, advantages, drawbacks, occasional registration ID's, risks, rewards, and their own personal experiences with regards to buying fake, or real women's hand bags. Really what i'm into. I learned that some louis vuitton, real or fake, isn't hip and is more of an older lady look. I have always told myself, if a 30 dollar women's handbag (we don't call them purses anymore, i guess) does the trick, then a $400 has to be like 10 times more functional.

Obviously i didn't want to derail the natural flow of their conversation. But turns out that 3 hours later when no one knew what was going on, if we were going to fly, or not, or when, or from what gate, I felt bad for them not understanding what the Russians were YELLING at the gate agent, and gate agent YELLING back at them….. I felt bad. I told them no one knew anything. Whatever. After waiting 3-4 hours, all of the sudden with no warning or announcement, everyone was running towards a different gate. Of course one of the girls I met left her jacket on her chair for maybe 1-2 minutes and of course someone stole it and the $25 inside. Such great people. Screaming at each other, fighting in lines, stealing jackets, etc.

They loaded us on the buses to go to bluth family staircar onto the plane. but we were going through the bone yard. a bunch of old planes, some with the cabin covered with canvas and no top, some older, newer, bigger, smaller…regardless it didn't instill a lot of confidence. Obviously I could tell that wonderful AeroSvit airlines (usually i swat the 'v' for an "ti") didn't have a working plane for us. Getting desperate they found, borrowed, won in a card game, russian roulette, who knows, some random GHETTO plane.

For some reason the guy stopped me at the bottom of the ramp to let the people onboard get settled. I was left with two other russian speaking turkish guys on the runway waiting to go up the stairs. One of them asked a worker if they could smoke. They all laughed, and as it was in Russian I laughed. The 2 guys looked at me and said, "Well do you have some smokes?" I replied, "yeah right." Then the guys said, "well we weren't going to smoke cigarettes, that's unsafe around the plane. But if we had a joint we'd smoke it." I chuckled. Then they stop laughing and asked, "Really though. Do you have a joint?" Unreal. Yeah, I do. I told the security check people that it was oregano. Maybe to break one more law, I can sell it to you instead of simply distributing it. Let's make it interesting.

I noticed that the plane we were getting on was in no way labeled AeroSvit. It wasn't even one of the several domestic carriers that i refuse to fly, but recognize. Plane said "Dniproavia" That company was based out of a local airport in a Ukraine, went out of business and government took control of the company in 2009. I was wondering who owned the plane, and how we ended up getting on it. So the Captain and opened the window in the front of the cockpit. Didn't know that was possible. Let's see those new fancy Boeings roll down their windshield windows. If you look at the picture and zoom in you can see it. No chance on this green earth that the pilots had any experience with this plane that was thrown at them.

Of course when we were boarding, they were frantically yelling and asking about 2 guys. finally found them, had the whole shady look. So of course I get on the plane and some mom wants her daughter to trade seats with me. then a girl wanted to sit by her husband, etc. After my 3 seat, of course who sits down next to me? Mr. "Selected for Additional Screening" as george clooney says. A terrorist attack was the least of my worries. At least a bomb would mean instant death as opposed to minutes of free falling. I just want to go quick.

As everyone is taking their seats, everyone starts to notice that there are 6 or 7 people that were put in rows 22 and 23 that didn't exist. That plane only had 21 rows. They weren't complaining as most of them ended up in the elegant business class. The captain gets on, does his little speech in Russian for this 1 hour 40 minute flight, and then, bless his heart, tries it in English. "The flight today will be one thousand 40 minutes." Could it get any better. Yup.

We seemed to taxi and take forever to get up in the air. I was falling asleep and happy about it. But then i wake up to the plane, barely a few hundred feet STRUGGLING to get enough lift. I was thinking, more throttle. more speed. more lift. come on, you can do it. Then when we hit probably 700-1000 feet, a few people on the plane actually started clapping. Like the little engine that could. Because of the delay, i was starving, ate some food, slept a little, watched some ipod videos, and just couldn't wait for the landing. I took closed my eyes, put my head on the seat next to me, took the crash position, and thanked the good Lord when i was walking on Turkish soil. Now that i have a plug, internet, and real food my layover got cut down from 6 hours to 1.5. awesome. I take off at 10 PM in Turkey, land at 6 a.m. in Istanbul and Sunday has begun. i didn't sleep last night night so really by sunday night, i will have had one night sleeping in a bed since the previous Tuesday. All a big blur.

If you are still reading I am impressed and you deserve a gold star. (except ainsley. she got me into blogging so she HAS to read this crap. and she hasn't posted anything in a week, so she must have time....)

when the captain said if there is anything that he could do to make the flight more enjoyable, i laughed out loud and thought to myself, besides an extremely strong, fast acting sedative, it was unlikely they could offer much...

Because I am so classy sporting the mullet/mohawk people have commented that I am white trash, bum, too extreme, etc.... (the older ladies at work think I look very nice actually. they only see the front)

So like on tosh.0, let's break it down...

His hair is long on top short on the sides, and defiantly LONGER in the back flowing off his shirtline. This isn't a picture of some random weird guy, this is a big ad in the local shopping center. HE IS A Ukrainian MODEL! I'm sure not the top paid model in Ukraine. But we do need to give him some credit. The girl seems like a nice young lady. Couldn't have been unpleasant for him at all!

The moral of the story is that some people thought I was going for something radical like a Mohawk (ok, i was... but the story get better) No, it has become the final step in making my move, doing what it takes to fit in with the high profile, fashion sensible Russians, Ukrainian, or Kazaks and rise to to top here.

I will own the USSR!!!! (Now it is called the CIS)

PS Did you see the girl in the ad? Not bad at all. I know modest is hottest, but I see super hot young ladies running around town all the time with random weird looking russians with mullets. And usually not attractive mullet guys.

I went outside to go home to the barn late Saturday night after hanging out with Dad. The moon was out, clouds moving, so i wanted to get some pictures. Moon hid behind the clouds and I couldn't get a good shots, but I played around for a few hours and got some pretty cool shots.

I know Ainsley will ask, so I will say it now. These pictures are straight off the camera. No editing. True story.

Award of the night goes to Paul. He made an unplanned trip to LAX way late, drove me back to the happiest place on earth, DHS....basically saved my butt in a bind. Extra mile award. Definitely been a rocky start to west-coast-weekend-o-fun-2010 -(part I). But we were laughing and having such a good time that after an hour into the drive, neither of us had noticed that we hadn't pressed play on the ipod. Paul and Ains are the type of people that will drop everything, drive 4 hours out of the way. BUT it's not a chore; we'll laugh and laugh and laugh and honestly have a blast catching up and talking about up the good old crow's nest, T&S, the PG~C~, and our future dirt bike adventures.. This weekend will be great now that the task of getting me here is over. Dang spring break and full flights.... The NOS flowing through our systems didn't hurt

I hate blogging about how i went and bought groceries, then cleaned the barn and how awesome this or that is (none of that is true)... but i'm not traveling so i have to be creative. Here are the 3 highlights from last week.

1) Animal tracking

what a well preserved little track. I need to consult clay.

this is a quinn track. a fun little bike ride turned into a ride/snow hike from draper up and over to highland.

2) New Purchases

Mal and I are SO happy that Kendall has a new toy!!!! We are going on some epic journeys.

Griffin and Caitlin had birth to Fletcher James Edwards. The kid is already a riot. He pooped himself at what couldn't have been a less opportune time (like father like son) and he tried to get milk from....shirtless Griffin. Doc's orders.

I have been listening to pennywise nonstop today to celebrate...... Hope fletcher j turns out as great as my other favorite fletcher....

Caitlin calls it griggin's time out, griggin calls it his office or concentration room. I call it a AMAZING. Makes the barn look HUGE.

We had a great layover in the ATL... would have polished a whole dish of caitlin's delicous peanut butter choco treats if griggin hadn't saved the last row from the ravenous wolves. Also we got to meet long time cyber friends, Megan and Adam. We talked mostly about blowing things up, and going #1 and #2. Never had a bad trip to Atlanta...or a dry one for that matter.

So today i tried to take pictures of things that interest you. I was taking pictures of new born children for you and all their cute outfits, but I got yelled at by the parents.

Then I went around to get some pictures of the poolside fashion displayed by young adult girls, but I got beat up by their boyfriends.

Today was sweet. We rented a car, drove the dry small island, went to the beach, hiked a 600 foot mountain, ate thai food, finally got burned a bit, did my first beach-start on a 155 liter windsurf, tanner and I both rode bigger sails today....gonna finally get some windsurfing pictures/video tomorrow. promise.

Today was awesome. We went to the pool, hung out, walked around, and windsurfed for a few hours until our arms were jello. I was really excited because Dad still thinks I don't know how to windsurf and tanner was nice enough to get tons of sweet pics of me riding....then I noticed that I forgot to put the memory card back in the camera. DANG IT!!!! It was so windy and I went down 2 board sizes to a board with only a rear fin.

It was amazing. Beautiful water, tons of wind, and kiteboarders HAULING and weaving in and out all over the place. It was crazy. I keep fighting the kiteboarding revolution, but it does look pretty amazing...
